Types of Honey Bees

Most people use the word “bee” as if all bees are the same. They are not. Honey bees are only one part of the larger bee family, and even within managed honey bees there are different regional lines, breeding programs, local stocks, and hybrids. Understanding those differences helps explain why Honey Bee Awareness says: Save the Right Bees.

The Main Point

Africanized honey bees are not a separate, easy-to-recognize “monster bee.” They are honey bees with genetics that can make some colonies much more defensive. That is why appearance alone is not enough. Behavior, genetics, management, and location all matter.

Honey Bees vs. Other Bees

Honey bees are only one group of bees. Bumble bees, carpenter bees, sweat bees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, and many other native bees also play important roles in pollination. Honey Bee Awareness focuses mainly on honey bees because managed hives, feral honey bee colonies, Africanized honey bee genetics, and the serious public-safety incidents tracked by this project all involve honey bees.

Western Honey Bee: Apis mellifera

The honey bee most familiar to beekeepers in North America is the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. Many managed lines used in the United States are regional types or selected breeding lines within this same species.

That means Italian bees, Carniolan bees, Russian bees, Caucasian bees, many commercial hybrids, local survivor stocks, and Africanized honey bees are all discussed here in relation to western honey bee genetics and behavior.

Common Managed Honey Bee Lines

The descriptions below are general education summaries. Real colonies vary. A colony’s behavior can be affected by queen genetics, drone genetics, age of queen, colony strength, nectar flow, weather, management, disease pressure, robbing pressure, and disturbance level.

Carniolan Bees
Apis mellifera carnica
Known for spring buildup, wintering ability, and adaptability in cooler climates. Often darker than Italians. Can build rapidly when conditions improve. A managed line, not a public-safety concern by name alone. Rapid spring buildup, swarm tendency, and management timing can matter.
Russian Bees
USDA-related breeding stock
Developed from Far-Eastern Russian stock and known for Varroa resistance traits. Colony buildup may track pollen availability more closely than Italian stock. Useful example of how genetics and selection can influence colony traits. Management style may need to match the stock.
Caucasian Bees
Apis mellifera caucasica
A recognized honey bee race historically discussed in North American beekeeping. Often associated with gentleness and heavy propolis use. Not usually central to Africanized bee public-safety discussions, but useful for explaining that managed honey bees include multiple regional lines.
Local Survivor / Texan Stock Local or regionally selected bees may be chosen for performance in a specific climate, survival traits, productivity, and workable behavior. Local adaptation can be valuable, but “local,” “survivor,” or “wild” should not be used as an excuse to keep highly defensive colonies near people or animals.
Africanized Honey Bees
Apis mellifera hybrids
Honey bees with African-derived genetics. They generally look like other honey bees to the public, but some colonies may respond faster, in greater numbers, and with more persistence when disturbed. This is the central public-safety concern. The issue is not that they are honey bees; the issue is highly defensive behavior near people, pets, livestock, workers, or public spaces.

Managed Bees Are Not All the Same

Beekeepers select bees for different reasons: gentleness, honey production, wintering ability, mite resistance, spring buildup, brood pattern, queen quality, and performance in local weather. Those goals can overlap, but no single line is perfect everywhere.

This is why responsible beekeeping matters. A colony should not be judged only by its label. It should be judged by its behavior, location, management history, and risk to the people and animals around it.

Africanized vs. Managed European-Derived Lines

The public often wants a simple visual comparison: “Is this an Africanized bee or an Italian bee?” In most real situations, that question cannot be answered safely by looking at the bee. Africanized honey bees and European-derived honey bees can look extremely similar without measurement or testing.

The more useful public-safety question is: “How is this colony behaving, where is it located, and what happens when it is disturbed?” A colony hidden in a wall, tree, water meter, shed, irrigation box, old tire, RV, boat, equipment compartment, or brush pile can create danger long before anyone knows its genetic background.

Why Genetics Matter

Honey bee colonies are shaped by both the queen and the drones she mates with. In Africanized regions, open-mated queens may encounter drones carrying highly defensive genetics. That can affect the next generation of worker bees and the behavior of future colonies.

This is one reason Honey Bee Awareness connects education, incident documentation, and research. The goal is not to scare people away from honey bees. The goal is to protect workable, manageable honey bee genetics while taking dangerous defensive behavior seriously.

Do Not Normalize Aggressive Bee Behavior

Honey bees can be defensive. That is normal. But repeated, extreme, or dangerous defensive behavior near homes, workers, animals, schools, parks, or public areas should not be dismissed as “just bees.”

Responsible beekeeping and public safety are not opposites. They belong together.

Other Honey Bee Species Around the World

The western honey bee is not the only honey bee species. Other Apis species include the eastern honey bee, giant honey bees, and dwarf honey bees found in parts of Asia. These species are important scientifically, but they are not the main focus of Honey Bee Awareness public-safety work in North America.
